With its impacts being evident all across the world, climate change is a global issue of the utmost urgency. Adopted in 2015, the Paris Agreement set a goal of limiting the global temperature increase to within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and the international community has been taking action to transition to a decarbonised and more resilient society. In spite of such efforts, GHG emissions continue to rise, and climate change adaptation measures are significantly behind schedule.
The Climate Change Unit will strongly support efforts to promote a transition to a decarbonised and resilient society through a wide range of activities, including engagement in international processes related to climate change such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, support for climate change countermeasures and capacity building in various Asian countries, assistance for local government planning, and research on promoting integrated approaches.
