Cities & Rural Areas

Cities and rural areas play a crucial role in achieving global sustainability agreements and targets. IGES works toward their achievement from the local level through collaboration with diverse stakeholders, whilst responding to the needs of urban and rural areas. Our institute engages in research towards the realisation of Circulating and Ecological Spheres (CES), which aim for sustainable, self-reliant and decentralised societies. We also support and promote Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), undertake capacity building and empowerment of regions, and facilitate the sharing of knowledge gained from these activities.
