Sustainable Consumption and Production

The development of modern society has been based on large-scale resource extraction, processing, utilisation and disposal, and this has been the leading cause of environmental degradation and resource depletion. If a sustainable society is to be achieved, it is crucial to make the transition to a circular economy model based on the principles of resource circulation, waste minimisation, extended product lifespans and material reuse.

Conducting practical and policy-oriented research activities, the Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Unit supports countries across Asia to make the transition to a circular, resource-efficient social economy. The Unit is actively involved in international processes related to resource circulation, while also promoting diverse initiatives such as supporting policy formulation and capacity building in waste management and integrated water environment management for countries and local governments, promoting circular business models, and transforming local communities and lifestyles through citizen-led efforts.
