Lifestyles & Citizen Participation

Building a sustainable society requires the transformation of socioeconomic systems, which includes the active engagement of individuals in their local communities. IGES engages with communities in Japan and across Asia, working with diverse stakeholders—including local governments, research and educational institutions, businesses, citizens and young people—to support citizen-led initiatives towards realising more sustainable lifestyles.

Our approach combines practical implementation—through collaborative projects and educational programmes—with strategic development of policies and business models. This work is underpinned by research activities that draw on insights from behavioural science.
